Our One Month Trip Abroad:
After about a month abroad in several Asian countries, we have returned with only 12 gemstones…This compares to looking at many tens of thousands of gems the last time we did a similar trip, where we returned with 150 gemstones – a lot of time spent looking and talking in the past, but we seek center gemstones, so the size has to be correct, the color has to be really fine, the cutting is important as we want lively gems and don’t want the waste of both weight loss and money for those gems that have to be re-cut; and very important, the price has to be correct so that we can be more than just competitive out there in the market and sell gemstones below wholesale, at wholesale and at times between wholesale and retail.  With inventory high and costs for fine material VERY high in the market (and they won’t be going down), plus the 19% commission that must be paid to the US Government for imported items from these areas of the world, it is more than a challenge to be able to make purchases and resell where our clients/customers can both afford and find value.  In looking into some tariffs recently for a better understanding, it seems that Thailand had some tariffs for imported goods from the US, such as industrial parts, some food products and a few limited other items – but the tariffs imposed on the importers in the US purchasing from Thailand, is across the board on all items and is 19%.  For those in the trade that might send out rough to be faceted in different countries, when their material comes back worked, there would in the past be no tariff – now, they must pay 19% in order to obtain their own merchandise back…and if the tariff isn’t paid, the material goes back to the sender.  It seems impossible to break even with all the costs that are associated with traveling, making purchases as close to the source as possible, trying to obtain the best price, and with only a total of 12 gemstone purchased, making ones money back seems an impossibility.  Just the time on a flight to get from the US to these countries, from the East Coast we are typically talking 15 hours onboard ONE PLANE and there are stop overs also, so depending on ones destination, add up to about another 5 hours…and layovers are typically 3 hours, and then there is the anticipated 3 arrival timeframe prior to departure for international travel, not to mention getting to and from an airport…so we are talking about 30 or so hours when one leaves ones office/home to the time they arrive at their destination hotel – and if like many people, that might be 30 hours or so of no sleep and a time change which could be 12-13 hours or so  There is one individual in the mineral trade who was recently traveling for 3 months – he had just left Bangkok prior to our arrival there ourselves, and he was off to India!  He did note that his travel time back home would be about 72 hours – and he took a 4+hour Uber ride from one area in India just to get to the airport.  You really have to love what you do in cases like this with long travel times; and from personal experience, one will get sick with the flu or a cold and frequently have issues with food which puts one out of commission for a few days.  International colds can be incredibly bad also.  And to close out this topic, yes, this time once again, while traveling for a month, a cold was encountered as well as a few bouts of something most likely related to food…
(The above information will be deleted from March’s Monthly Email and subsequent monthly emails)

The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show IS HERE!:
It’s that time of the year again and tens of thousands of dealers from around the world will descend into Tucson for the Tucson
Gem and Mineral Shows.  Listings show 3000+ vendors/exhibitors with possibly 65,000 attendees from around the world.
Unfortunately, this is a bad time of the year for large gatherings of people, especially from abroad, where flu is prevalent and virus hunters keep their eyes open for new variations of bird flu and other viruses.  In talking to another dealer, who is an award winning cutter and has faceted some incredible gemstones from our rough (a large number still available!), we think that one gets sick with something during attendance and that seems to happen about every 3 years.  So, whether it is flu, colds, RSV, covid, norovirus, etc. vigilance doesn’t mean we can return in the same health as when we arrived.  Covid reared its head the day the owner of All That Glitters went to fly back to the east coast back in 2024 – and there are all kinds of stories of issues/sicknesses during an approximately 40 year attendance!

Gemstones in Cutting:
We might be faceted a LuAG YAG, that Lab Grown (Ce:LuAG, lutetium aluminum garnet (Lu3Al5O12) doped with cerium) that glows like lime green radiator fluid – looks like it is radioactive!  To quote a GIA article on this material – “This material was introduced to the optics industry in the late 1990s and acts as a scintillator, a fluorescent crystal that absorbs high-energy radiation such as X-rays or gamma rays and reemits them as lower-energy visible light that is much easier to detect.”
Contemplating on sending some rough to one of our specialty cutters, but working out the details.
There is very little new rough presently in our inventory in general and we already have representations faceted from that rough, including:  Blue Flash Amethyst, Blended Ametrine, Tourmaline, Color Change Diaspore, Yellow Beryl, Color Change Garnet, Umbalite and Rhodolite Garnet, Oregon Sunstone, Lab Grown Alexandrite and others….
